Introduction

Hong Kong is overwhelmed by air pollution. Air Pollution Index (API) stands at a high level throughout the year. It is estimated that around 38 billion dollars are spent each year to cover the health care cost and loss of productivity in relation to air-pollution-related respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses.

The Hong Kong Tuberculosis, Chest and Heart Diseases Association, in conjunction with Environmental Protection Department and other prestigious organizations, operated a series of exhibitions in 2000 and 2001 with the aim of enhancing public awareness about the environmental factors related to respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses. The exhibitions also provided basic health information to the public and introduced the concept of disease prevention.

This booklet is based on the information extracted from the exhibitions. It shows our firm commitment to environmental protection and health promotion. We hope it will be useful for those who read it.
