Chinese Medicine Service -- Hong Kong Tuberculosis, Chest and Heart Diseases Association

Hong Kong Tuberculosis, Chest and Heart Diseases Association (HKTBA) was established in 1948.  For more than half a century, the Association has been working closely with the Government and other non-governmental organizations in preventing and education on tuberculosis and heart diseases.

In line with the Government’s policy on the development of Chinese Medicine, Hospital Authority (HA), the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and HKTBA started working together to establish The Hong Kong Tuberculosis Association Chinese Medicine Clinic cum Training Centre of the University of Hong Kong in April 2006 at 2/F Tang Shiu Kin Hospital, Wan Chai.  The clinic provides general consultations, acupuncture and tui-na treatment.

In order to meet the service demand of Chinese Medicine in the community, the three named organizations cooperated again in 2011 to establish The Hong Kong Tuberculosis Association—the University of Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Clinic cum Training and Research Centre (Aberdeen).  The clinic is located at 2/F Aberdeen Jockey Club Clinic.

The objectives of the two aforementioned clinics are as follows:

  1. To provide quality Chinese medicine service on a non-profit making basis
  2. To provide training opportunities for graduates from Chinese medicine schools of local tertiary institutions
  3. To collaborate with the Hospital Authority and the University of Hong Kong to promote evidence-based Chinese medicine practice and clinical researches in compliance with the requirements set by the Hospital Authority

Chinese Medicine Management System (CMIS), which is developed by HA, is being used by the two clinics.  The system is responsible for case management, clinical teaching, consolidation of research data, patient registration, appointment-booking, shroff, dispensary and management.

In order to strengthen the role of providing medical service in the community, the two clinics were re-named as The Hong Kong Tuberculosis Association—The University of Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Clinic cum Training and Research Centre (Wan Chai District) and The Hong Kong Tuberculosis Association—The University of Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Clinic cum Training and Research Centre (Southern District)  The clinics would continue providing quality Chinese Medicine service, training and researches for the development of the industry.

To bring the wisdom of Chinese Medicine to the community, HKTBA established Hong Kong Tuberculosis Association Chinese Medicine Centre at 18/F, 83 Wan Chai Road, Wan Chai in January 2019.  The clinic, which is solely owned, managed and operated by HKTBA, provides general consultation, acupuncture and tui-na treatment.  And with the generous donation from Mr. Edwin C.C. LEUNG (Vice-chairman of HKTBA), the clinic was re-named as Hong Kong Tuberculosis Association Edwin Leung Chinese Medicine Clinic after the opening ceremony held on 6 July 2019.

Community education on healthy living is all-along an important duty of HKTBA.  Being one of the services of the Association, the clinics take an active role in connecting the society through Chinese Medicine.  Our Chinese Medicine Practitioners delivers health talks, health consultations and other activities in the community (e.g. elderly centres, patient groups, etc.).  Moreover, the knowledge and advantage of Chinese Medicine are also spread via mass media, naming newspaper, magazines, TV and radio.  Through these means, we hope that the community could be benefit from Chinese Medicine and maintain healthy living.
